Unfortunately, the developer didn't implemented such a function in the application. Because of this, there is no way to make the sender's name to flash in the tool bar. To be noticed that the application was discontinued in 2013, so it won't receive any updates nor support, so there is no way to implement the function that you desire in newer updates.
Other tools have a social media plugin to Outlook, like XING, LinkedIn or Facebook. It would be cool to have such a plugin for LYNC, than I could do everything directly from Outlook and would not need a stand alone client. Does that exist?

Yes, there is an add-on available that you can use with any Office tool, including Outlook. To add this add-on into Outlook, open it, go to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage > COM Add-ins > Go. In the COM add-ins dialog box, select Lync Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office 2013 check-box and then click OK. You need to have installed Outlook 2013 and be logged in with an Administrator account. to activate the add-on.
Is there a way to teach LYNC to use not only my contacts, but also the pictures I have associated with my contacts? Maybe there is a way to synchronize LYNC with VBA?

Yes. It seems that you can use a script to import associated pictures once you import contacts to Lync. You can find the script on the following official website. Once your there, you can search for more information about the ability of the product to sync with a VBA application. To be noticed that this product was discontinued by the developer, so you won't be able to receive any support in this matter.
